HK Alley Cat Watch E-News - 20th July 2004

Trapping & Neutering

The pyramid below is not an exaggeration and although we at HK Alley Cats are very pro-active in trap, neuter, release (TNR), because we were unable to recently trap two 'canny females' we now have four more kittens on the streets. Not all is lost as in an attempt to trap one of the mother cat's, her three kittens entered the trap and have been neutered courtesy of the SPCA's Cat Colony Care Program. Although the mother is still at large, we will get her at all costs as we know from experience just how fast colonies can grow and if they become too large they can become a nuisance for local residents. Street cats that are neutered for the most part benefit from a health perspective and the big plus for people living in their vicinities is that they become noiseless as neutering puts an end to the mating game.

Thinking of Adopting a cat?

If you have children you should take into consideration the following:

If the members of your family are young (i.e. children under 12), it is recommended that you avoid cats that are skittish or easily startled by noises and activity. You should also avoid cats with a history of aggression. Though kittens are cute and so playful, they are not always good matches for households with young children under 7 years old. Kittens are fragile physically and need consistent and gentle handling. They can develop serious behavioural problems if not raised with care by all members of the household.

Moving House or Refurbishing your flat?

It would be a good idea to make sure your cats are put into an enclosed quiet room. Cats don't like noise or being disrupted from their daily cat naps. Make sure they are in a room where they can't escape (windows closed) and where you can find them easily later. It's always an idea to have name tag collars (even for flat cats) just on the off-chance they do get lost.

Fabulous Kittens Looking for Fantastic homes!

20 July 2004

Shandi (F) & Sasha (M), the adorable 6 week old sibling kittens are ready and waiting to be homed. Ideally these kittens would be best suited to go to a home together. They are joined at the hip and very inquisitive.

Adorable Joshie (M) was rescued with his sibling brother & sister who have already been homed. Joshie is definitely the most affectionate out of his siblings, he's approx 4 mths old. He loves being around people and he purrs whilst entangling himself round your feet. If you want an attentive kitten, he's definitely the boy for you.

Cat Proofing Your home

Non-Toxic & Environmentally Safe Cleaning Agents

If you are a clean freak, or would like to ensure your house is a bacteria-free zone, you may want to consider using some of these safe & natural products that really do work as confirmed by a HK Alley Cat Family member:

  • Borox - effective at killing micro-organisms and fungi that even hospitals use it - though not technically classified as a disinfectant - it does the job just as well (1 tsp Borox, 3 tblsp vinegar, 2 cups of hot tap water) and spray contaminated area. Rinse if Borox residue is still visible. You can purchase Borox at the Foreign Buyers Club www.fbchk.com
  • Zeolite - If you have a kitten that has had an accident on your favourite carpet (or inside your samsonite carry on case as mine did) you can use this product: you sprinkle the powder onto the urinated area, leave it for the night, then vaccum the area. Voila, no smell! You can purchase Zeolite at The Green Earth Society in Sai Kung.

Foods Which Are Toxic to cats

Common food items can be poisonous to cats and kittens, sometimes in very small amounts. Food items, especially those listed below, should not be given to cats, and should be stored out of their reach. Care should be taken while preparing and serving foods to assure a cat will not be tempted to "taste test" them.

Chocolate and Caffeine

Foods to Avoid

Garbage Intoxication/Food Poisoning

Grapes/Raisins

Macadamia Nuts

Mushroom

Onion and Garlic

Did you know that essential oils are unsafe to use on cats? Care should also be taken when you are diffusing oils in the house with an oil burner as this can cause damage to their liver. - check out this link to learn more: http://www.thelavendercat.com

Successfully Homed

This picture was sent in by Ruth & David who adopted Archie recently as a playmate for their cat Ming. Ruth was a bit worried that Archie would not be accepted straight away, but as you can tell from the photo it looks like the family has bonded very quickly.
