LIFE ON THE STREET

As at 27/7/04 160 cats desexed

People either love them or hate them, but the street cats are here to stay, that is until their numbers are eventually eliminated through trap, neuter, release (TNR).

At HK Alley Cat Watch, and in conjunction with the SPCA’s Cat Colony Care Program, we continue to practice TNR as the best possible means to reduce the number of cats living on our streets. However, this will never become an eventuality without responsible pet ownership. The cats we find among our already neutered colonies have been abandoned mainly due to ill health and kittens born to domestic cats.

Although life on the streets is not always easy for Hong Kong’s felines, those that are fortunate enough to have a Carer fair pretty well. Here at HK Alley Cat Watch, we not only have them desexed, but look after their general welfare such as daily feeds and vet visits when deemed necessary. Our colony cats in Mid Levels, which number in the region of 80, are fat and healthy specimens and in a lot of cases are in better condition than a lot of their domesticated cousins.

Cats are wonderful breeders with one female cat delivering between 4 – 6 litters each year averaging 3 kittens per litter. Is there no wonder there are so many living on the streets! Thankfully, there are more desexed cats on the streets these days. How do you spot them? Easy! Desexed cats have the tips of one of their ears clipped: right ear for boys and left one for girls.

Here is a photo of one of our trapped & neutered males Old Yellar(notice his right ear clipped).

If you are a lover of cats but are unable to have them in your home because of a no pet policy, allergies or uncertainty as to how long you will stay in Hong Kong, but would like to contribute towards their well being, we’d love to hear from you.
