Cat Tips

Neutering

It is recommended that all responsible pet owners neuter their cats. In male cats this is called “castration” and in female cats “Spaying”.

If you cat is an indoor cat, it is beneficial for you to neuter your cat. Male cats can become restless if they are not neutered and will start calling at doors and windows in frustration at not being allowed out to all those wonderful females outside, this would usually go on whilst you are trying to sleep. Male cats also have a tendency to spray to mark their territory, this will not only be in the litter box but everywhere in the house.

If female cats are not neutered they will come into season. A female on heat will crawl onto the floor with her behind lifted and her tail to one side. She will wander around the flat howling. So this is really not an ideal situation you want for yourself and your house cat.

When should a cat be neutered?

Most vets will recommend that you wait till the cat is approximately 6-8 months old, but if a kitten shows signs of maturing, it is safe to neuter a kitten as early as 4 months old, though 6 months old is the recommended age for neutering.

Physical changes

Male urine is particularly strong and pungent. Castration leads to a more normal urine odor. In street cats, you will notice that the top of the ear is clipped, this is to show that the cat has been desexed.

Does neutering lead to any adverse effects on health or behaviour?

The answer is most definitely no. At HK Alley Cat Watch we recommend that all responsible pet owners desex their companion at 6 months old. There are many misconceptions about the effects of neutering on health and behaviour. Neutered males are no more likely to become fat or lazy provided that they receive an adequate diet. Every attempt should be made to neuter prior to puberty before the cat develops new problems, experiences and habits.

Please contact our local Vet practices to find out more about neutering, or to book your cat in to be neutered.
